    Reduction of voluntary dehydration during effort in hot environments

    During an experimental marching trip the daily positive fluid balance was preserved by providing a wide choice of beverages during the hours of the day. It was found that the beverage most suitable for drinking in large quantities during periods of effort was a cold drink with sweetened (citrus) fruit taste. Carbonated drinks, including beer, but milk also, were found unsuitable for this purpose

    EPR entanglement strategies in two-well BEC

    Criteria suitable for measuring entanglement between two different potential wells in a Bose- Einstein condensation (BEC) are evaluated. We show how to generate the required entanglement, utilizing either an adiabatic two-mode or dynamic four-mode interaction strategy, with techniques that take advantage of s-wave scattering interactions to provide the nonlinear coupling. The dynamic entanglement method results in an entanglement signature with spatially separated detectors, as in the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    New Ways to Soft Leptogenesis

    Soft supersymmetry breaking terms involving heavy singlet sneutrinos provide new sources of lepton number violation and of CP violation. In addition to the CP violation in mixing, investigated previously, we find that `soft leptogenesis' can be generated by CP violation in decay and in the interference of mixing and decay. These additional ways to leptogenesis can be significant for a singlet neutrino Majorana mass that is not much larger than the supersymmetry breaking scale, M<100mSUSYM < 100 m_{SUSY}. In contrast to CP violation in mixing, for some of these new contributions the sneutrino oscillation rate can be much faster than the decay rate, so that the bilinear scalar term need not be smaller than its natural scale.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figure

    A New Supersymmetric CP Violating Contribution to Neutral Meson Mixing

    We study the contribution to flavor changing neutral current processes from box diagrams with light higgsinos and squarks. Starting with just the Cabbibo Kobayashi Maskawa (CKM) phase, we find contributions to the K0K^0 and B0B^0 meson mass matrices that are out of phase with the Standard Model contributions in the case of substantial mixing between the up-type squarks. This difference in phase could be large enough to be detected at the proposed BB factories, with interesting implications for the unitarity triangle of CKM matrix elements.Comment: 1 reference added, 1 reference clarified, 2 typos corrected (QCD corrections to K meson mixing in Tables 1 and 3).     BB flavor tagging will be extensively studied at the asymmetric BB factories due to its importance in CP asymmetry measurements. The primary tagging modes are the semileptonic decays of the bb (lepton tag), or the hadronic bc(s)b \to c (\to s) decays (kaon tag). We suggest that looking for time dependent CP asymmetries in events where one BB is tagged leptonically and the other one is tagged with a kaon could result in an early detection of CP violation. Although in the Standard Model these asymmetries are expected to be small, 1\sim 1%, they could be measured with about the same amount of data as in the ``gold-plated'' decay BdψKSB_d \to \psi K_S. In the presence of physics beyond the Standard Model, these asymmetries could be as large as 5\sim 5%, and the first CP violation signal in the BB system may show up in these events.     Constraining New Physics with the CDF Measurement of CP Violation in BψKSB \to \psi K_S

    Recently, the CDF collaboration has reported a measurement of the CP asymmetry in the BψKSB\to\psi K_S decay: aψKS=0.790.44+0.41a_{\psi K_S}=0.79^{+0.41}_{-0.44}. We analyze the constraints that follow from this measurement on the size and the phase of contributions from new physics to B-\barB mixing. Defining the relative phase between the full M12M_{12} amplitude and the Standard Model contribution to be 2θd2\theta_d, we find a new bound: \sin2\theta_d\gsim-0.6 (-0.87) at one sigma (95% CL).     Velocity dependent interactions and a new sum rule in bcc He

    Recent neutron scattering experiments [PRL,{\bf 88},p.195301 (2002)] on solid 4^4He, discovered a new optic-like mode in the bcc phase. This excitation was predicted by a recently proposed model that describes the correlated atomic zero-point motion in bcc Helium in terms of dynamic electric dipole moments. Modulations of the relative phase of these dipoles between different atoms describes the anomalously soft T1_1(110) phonon and two new optic-like modes, one of which was recently found in the neutron scattering experiments. In this work we show that the correlated dipolar interactions can be written as a velocity dependent interaction. This then results in a modified f-sum rule for the T1_1(110) phonon, in good agreement with the recent experimental data.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Direct CP violation in charm and flavor mixing beyond the SM

    We analyze possible interpretations of the recent LHCb evidence for CP violation in D meson decays in terms of physics beyond the Standard Model. On general grounds, models in which the primary source of flavor violation is linked to the breaking of chiral symmetry (left-right flavor mixing) are natural candidates to explain this effect, via enhanced chromomagnetic operators. In the case of supersymmetric models, we identify two motivated scenarios: disoriented A-terms and split families. These structures predict other non-standard signals, such as nuclear EDMs close to their present bounds and, possibly, tiny but visible deviations in K and B physics, or even sizable flavor-violating processes involving the top quark or the stops. Some of these connections, especially the one with nuclear EDMs, hold beyond supersymmetry, as illustrated with the help of prototype non-supersymmetric models.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figure

    Framework for Identification of Neutral B Mesons

    We introduce a method for the study of CP-violating asymmetries in tagged states of neutral BB mesons with arbitrary coherence properties. A set of time-dependent measurements is identified which completely specifies the density matrix of the initial state in a two-component space with basis vectors B0B^0 and B0\overline B^0, and permits a determination of phases in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. For a given tagging configuration, the measurement of decays both to flavor eigenstates and to CP eigenstates provides the necessary information.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.
